It is called ‘Education Week’ because it was adopted from the Protestants who had a whole week of inspecting their schools and checking on various sectors that the school should have. Later alone the Catholic Church in the central ecclesiastical province, judging that it was a good practice for the schools as formation centres of her future Christians, adapted it with even a more arduous and nourishing dimension of music. This festival has a number of activities which are all meant to awaken and uplift the talents of children and students throughout the diocese and late alone the central ecclesiastical province. The Church in Masaka sought that through music, dance, Bible reading and essay writing, which follow an activity of inspection of schools, her children would develop in talent and would be induced to love God more and serve the Church in the time to come. The competitions are held each year with the guidance of a particular theme that is given to us by the Bishop. This was the first of the kind since the inception of Sts. Alex & Henry Parish. The first years of the parish were interrupted by the COVID 19 pandemic bringing this festival to a standstill in the entire diocese and ecclesiastical province.
Competitions start at parish level, where all interested schools within a particular parish find a day to present items: Set Piece, Western Free Choice/MTO, Traditional Dance, Bible reading and Essay Writing. The winners at parish level go ahead to contest at the deanery level (which is the center of parishes within a given domestic territory). Then from the deanery, the winners proceed to the Diocesan level which is the climax and from this comes the champion from the entire diocese. From the Diocese then we proceed to have competitions at the central ecclesiastical level. Winners are from both primary and post primary levels of education. Therefore two winners are got at the end.
Since it was the first time, many of our schools were not prepared financially. It is only the four schools: St. Alex Kirowooza Primary School, Emmanuel Pilot School, Grace Learning Centre and St. Mary’s Mirembe that were able to present items that they had prepared. However the Father In-Charge invited all schools to bring children to learn and appreciate the art of the festival so that they can be ready by 2024. St. Alex Kirowooza Primary School emerged the champions of this year. St. Alex Kirowooza P/S and St. Anthony Kayunga SS (who had no contestants) will proceed to the deanery level on June 17.
