About
Our History
Kirowooza began as a sub-parish of Villa Maria Parish in 1932, when Chief Alex Ssebowa (RIP) donated 25 acres of land at the request of Simeo Ssemukwano (RIP).
The latter was helped by the late Kizannyiro, one of the remnants of the Uganda Martyrs who was convicted to be castrated, to construct the first Church of Kirowooza Sub-Parish. The first Church, which was grass thatched, latter got burnt.
In 1942, plans to reconstruct a stronger Church begun with brick laying in Nabyoledde swamp at Kigo, on Bukalasa rise. This work was spearheaded by Malitazaali. The bricks were carried by Christians on their heads from Nabyoledde swamp to Kirowooza station where a stronger Church was to be reconstructed. In 1943, after the requisite materials had been collected at the station, the construction began with an upper hand of; John Kiwanuka (RIP), Adrian Kiwanuka Muleetewa (RIP), Yakobo Muzira (RIP), Xaverio Kimmula (RIP), Deodato Basajjansolo (RIP) and Simon Ntale who still lives to date. They did the foundation work. The late Serverus Kakooza and John Kiwanuka together with Simon Ntale did the roofing with iron sheets, hence Kirowooza Church becoming one of the five buildings in the area with iron sheets.
In 1960, a strong wind blew off the roof of the Church and later on it was reconstructed by the late Anania Lubega and Adrian Mukasa who also fixed bricks in the isle. In 1982, Msgr. Timothy Ssemwogere advised the sub-parish executive and Christians of Kirowooza to construct the presbytery. He too was involved through donating financial assiatence. After the completion of the presbytery, Msgr. Timothy would sleep over during his pastoral visits in the villages of Kyojjomanyi and Kigo. He once prophesied that Kirowooza would, in futire, be elevated to a parish status. Kirowooza Sub-Parish then continued to prosper through the charity of Christians like Thomas Mayanja, who has a car and catered for transportation of items; and Edward Mukasa who donated priestly vestments; Peresi Lwasa constructed the Grotto of Mother Mary; Ben Ssemakula was a teacher and advised the Church committee in all ways.
In 2013 the Church, which had turned 70 years since 1943 had weakened, with an increased number of Christians who no longer would fit into the Church. The construction of another Church was indispensable. On 14th July 2013, Fr. Kaganda Kizito broke the ground for the construction of a new Church building which was began in the following year by the late Clement Ssewaya on 13th July 2014. He raised the Church building from the foundation up to the first beam above the lower windows. Unfortunately he died that very year in December 2014, bringing the work to a standstill! The Christian community resumed the construction work after a fundraising to a point where funds run out.
On 27 July 2017, the work resumed up to the ring beam, thereafter going to another standstill for a whole year with no resources. In 2018, the Christian community met Mr. John Kamya Mukalazi through Fr. Joseph Lukwago (RIP). Mr. Kamya who had known about his father’s dream to build a Church, was committed to funding the construction of the Church and the new presbytery to completion. His construction company started the work on July 2nd 2018 and did the roofing, finishing, constructed the parish yard, the compound and the presbytery.
On Friday August 14th 2019, after the completion of the work, Rt. Rev. Serverus Jjumba who had been ordained to the episcopate on 7th July 2019 blessed the new Church and commissioned Kirowooza into a Eucharistic centre. Kirowooza is therefore the first parish that he inaugurated in his episcopate. He appointed Fr. Francis Xavier Lubega and Fr. Pascal Ssewalu as the first resident priests. Later in the same year, during the 150th anniversary celebration of the existence of the Missionaries of Africa in Uganda at Villa Maria parish, the bishop elevated Kirowooza to a parish status. He from then appointed Fr. Vincent Ferrer Lusembo as the parish priest, Fr. John Mayiga as the curate. They started pastoral duties in the new parish together for close to a year. They were joined by Fr. Morris Kayanja on September 2, 2022 as the parochial vicar and Father In-charge of schools and chaplain to the youth and elderly.
